Behind The Lens

Location

My husband and I visited the Indianapolis Zoo on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. There weren't many animals out that day. This tiger was very playful in the snow. I took the shot trying to get the right look to show his playfulness.

Time

It was late afternoon when the sun was shining. I remember it had been cold that morning with fresh snow. Not many people were out exploring the zoo. My birthday was two days later and we decided to go to the zoo for an early birthday celebration. I always loved going to the zoo. I waited by this tiger's area for quite awhile fully enjoying his playfulness. He was playing with a ball then decided to eat the snow.

Lighting

The lighting is all natural.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon Coolpix L110 through the looking glass part of his enclosure. I had pressed the camera directly on the glass in order to make it appear as if nothing separated me from him.

Inspiration

I just loved his playfulness. I wanted to capture that emotion with an unique shot.

Editing

I cropped the image so the focus was solely on him.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my Nikon Coolpix L110. I recently added to my bag a Canon Powershot A480 and a Sony Digital HD Video Handycam. All three of the cameras provided different zooms. My highest zoom is the Handycam. I try to use that one more for long distance, up close shots.

Feedback

Don't let the glass between a zoo enclosure and your camera intimidate you. You can get some wonderful shots by pressing the lens right next to the glass. If you stand away from the glass to take the shot you can end up with marks in the image from the sunlight and dust. Be patient when working with animals. Watch what they do. Don't be afraid to take several shots. I took at least ten shots of this tiger just to get this shot.
