Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a rock formation in souther Luxembourg. My parents own a caravan on the campingsite 5 minutes from where this photo was taken.

Time

I went to my parents (who were in Luxembourg at the time) for a weekend full of photographing. I had given myself the goal to take a couple of sunset photo's (something I've never done before). At about 9pm I packed up my stuff and walked out to my favorite rock that is part of a vast rockformation that surrounds the town of Berdorf. I had the feeling I was a bit late when I've setup my gear, but nonetheless I started shooting. This photo was the 5th taken at 9:28pm. In the end I've taken nearly 200 shots in little over an hour, but nothing was as beautifull as this one.

Lighting

I've taken the photo directly into the setting sun. Even though you may not suspect it looking at the photo, the sun was actualy very orange at the time and nowhere near a bright as show in the photo.

Equipment

I've mounted my Nikon D3300 on my Rollei Star S3 tripod. The lens I used to take this shot was a Nikon 1.8 50mm prime lens. Also I used an ND filter, shooting into the sun without (even during a sunset) would result in a white picture. Even though the camera was on a tripod, I didn't have a remote shutter at the time. So I ended up holding the camera with 1 hand in the hopes I wouldn't shake it to much. (The remote shutter was in backorder and arrived 3 days after taking this shot)

Inspiration

I love nature as a whole, but I believe it really comes to live during the low light periods in the early mornings and late evenings. I wanted to take a photo of either a sunrise or sunset. Having done my homework and research I found out that there was no real spot in my own country (Holland) that could provide me with the shot I wanted. Because of this reason I went on a weekend trip to Luxembourg. Becasue my parents own a caravan here I had a place to stay and due to this I could take a few attempts at the sunrise and sunset. The beauty of this place for me is the rough terain and the long views. I'm not used to such views because back in Holland we don't have really have any. Atleast, none that I like and enjoy.

Editing

I have done some post-processing on this photo. The original was to dark, it had nearly black trees in the foreground and the sun was nearing the red side of orange. I've brightend the picture as a whole and played some with the red colors to make the more to the orange/yellow side. This also meant that the sun itself became a yellow ball of light again. The lensflare however is not added, this was part of the original shot.

In my camera bag

At the moment I only have a Nikon D3300 camera, so naturally all photo's I take are take with this camera. I own a 18-55mm kit lens that is always with me, though it nearly neveer leaves the bag, it is always there for when it's needed. The primary lens on the camera has been the 50mm prime lens. Ever since I bought it it hasn't left the camera, until last week. I've given myself a birthday present in the form of a Sigma 105 macro lens. It is this lens that is added to the camera at the moment and hasn't left it since I've taken it out of the box. Apart form the lenses, I cary with me my tripod (on the side of my bag) and an array of 12 filters. And of course, a cleaning kit.

Feedback

Plan ahead, do your homework and bring coffee. I had planed for a photo like this, however I did had the feeling I arrived on the late side of prime hour. Mind you, this was my first attempt at a sunset. I have learned from this though, when shooting in a certain lighting (be it a sunrise, sunset) make sure you arrive atleast 1 hour ahead of the prime hour. I've already learned that I often move places several times before I'm happy with my spot and due to me arriving in time I don't miss out on the most imporant moments anymore.
