Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Time

This shot was taken around 15:00. The tiger was enjoying the view.

Lighting

Standard Dutch july weather: cloudy. The photo was taken from a glass corridor that crosses the tiger habitat. Thick windows with tiger smudges on one side and nose and fingerprints of small children on the other. ISO 640 was needed to get a good exposure.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D mark II and a 70-200 /4 IS handheld. At f/5, there was a nice balance between the sharp parts of the face and the blurry background.

Inspiration

I try to take the pictures in a way that you cannot see that they were taken in a zoo.

Editing

The usual, cropping, contrast, whitebalance and sharpening.

In my camera bag

For this Zoo, which also has an aquarium, I took the 24-105, 70-200, 300/4 and an 8mm fisheye. I always take a flash with me.

Feedback

Because you cannot control the animals, these shots can take a bit of luck and a lot of patience. Try to avoid man made structures in the frame and try to get on eye level with tha animals. If you do not succeed at first try, come back later for a second. Or, if you have all the time in the world, buy a season ticket and stay for a longer time at one animal, to get a feel for their behaviour. A visit around feeding time will usually give good results for action shots.
