Mike Bromiley, a third generation rancher in Wenatchee, WA, brands his cows by the use of chutes. The cows are run into a confined area and safely secured while the brand is applied. The cows are individually encouraged through the chute into what's called a branding cradle. Here they are caught in a cradle which is rotated so that the animal is lying on its side. Then the brand is applied. Branding is used to identify ownership of the cattle. This is especially important in Western USA, where grazing of public lands is vital to raising cattle. Out on the vast ranges Cattle can easily wonder and get mixed with other herds. Believe it or not there are still cattle rustlers to beware of!! Enjoy!
