Behind The Lens
Location
I took this photo outdoors at a local park in Wahiawa,HI, of a U.S. Army Service Member prior to his deployment to the Middle East.Time
This photo was taken during a warm and beautiful day in sunny Hawaii. The Military Member wanted to have some photos taken with his young boys prior to his year long departure to Afghanistan. The beautiful son coupled with the natural emotions presented by the boys and their father was truly breath taking.Lighting
With the use of a reflector, I was able to use the abundance of natural like to overcome the heavy shadows cast off by the beautiful palm trees surrounding the scene. With such a tight frame of the father and son, I also wanted to take advantage of the natural light by focus most of the light on the fine facial features of an emotional son and his father.Equipment
This was shot handheld using a Nikon D600, Nikon 50mm f1.8 and all the natural light a photographer could ask for.Inspiration
As a Military spouse, I was looking for a setup that would allow the father and son to not only spend some of the father's last moments with his son alone, but also allow the two to display their true feelings and emotions in a beautiful, yet natural setting. Without any distractions from other patrons, they were both able to enjoy both the nature and the warm received from each other's love for one another. The true spirit of love and compassion were truly captured with all these factors taken into consideration.Editing
Post processing was minimal thanks to the natural lighting and sharp focus coming from the lens. Since I normally shoot in RAW with a flat profile, minor adjust were created by adjusting the sharpness and contrast, along with minor color correcting to make the green both from the subject and background separate and pop out at the viewer. In my camera bag
Traditionally I carry in my bag at least (2) Nikon DSLR cameras with a host of lens ranging from an 18-35mm, 50mm and 85mm. I also like to have at least one standard photo tripod with me, along with a very small tripod for those hard to reach angles. Additionally, I never leave home without a set of Neutral Density filters, Lens Wipes and a handy blower to remove dust. Depending on the location and lighting, you will also often find External Flash units as well as Wireless Remote triggers in my equipment selection.Feedback
Always consider the time of day and the background when trying to capture a similar photograph. The time of day plays a key role for getting the proper exposure without having to make major adjustments either in camera or in post processing. Also, you want to have your client/subject to be in a comfortable environment, not having to fight the elements of nature(e.g., heat, humidity, etc.) while enjoying a photo shoot. Additionally, always keep an eye on the background your shooting against. Be sure to remove anything that may be distracting and try to avoid ever placing your subject against a background that is more appealing than the subject.
