A native of tropical Africa, this ornamental vine climbs by means of tendrils at the ends of it’s long, blade-shaped leaves. The lily-like flowers consists of six narrow red and orange petals with crinkled edges, curving upwards in a cluster, and six prominent stamens projecting below. This plant is poisonous, toxic enough to cause human and animal fatalities if ingested. Every part of the plant is poisonous, especially the tuberous rhizomes. Shot at Gardens by the Bay, Singapore.

Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this picture at Gardens By the Bay in Singapore. It was growing in the Flower Dome, which is the world's largest green house.

Time

The shot was taken just before noon.

Lighting

Because of the cloudy skies, the lighting was not harsh.

Equipment

I used my Leica D Lux 4. Focal Length: 62.1 mm. Shutter Speed: 1/80 sec. Aperture: f/2.8 ISO: 100. No flash. The camera was hand-held. I use manual controls.

Inspiration

I had this vine on my garden fencing many, many years ago, but shifted house several times. So I was very pleased to see this at the Gardens By the Bay. This plant is a native of tropical Africa, an ornamental vine that climbs by means of tendrils at the ends of it’s long, blade-shaped leaves. But the flowers are captivating!

Editing

Minimal. Just cropping, sharpening, minor adjustment to definition and brightness.

In my camera bag

The Leica D Lux 4, and Sony A7R. I carry extensions tubes for close up work. A small Sony flash, as fill-in light or when I need to shoot insects at a higher shutter speed.

Feedback

People tend to see pretty flowers, and whip out their cameras, point and shoot. If you want better shots, walk around the flower to see at which angle does it looks better; look at the background if it's acceptable or does it distract, and study which is the best angle to shoot, ie. side views, head-on, from the top, etc.
