Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the street on the Upper West Side in Manhattan.

Time

I took this photo at 2:00 in the afternoon on an unusually warm and sunny day in April 2013. Whenever I get to New York, I do my best to walk as much of Manhattan as possible from north to south on the west side and the east side. The city never fails me.

Lighting

The lighting was the afternoon sun in early Spring in the southwest sky. I was facing directly east so we see the shadow trailing behind the truck. The light lit up the truck and made the contrast of the blue against the red and orange brick striking.

Equipment

I had only my iphone 4S in hand at the time. I shot this while walking. I don't think I even stopped. The image was very personal, so I wasn't thinking about position, lighting, viewpoint, background, etc. I just wanted to remember this truck.

Inspiration

In April of 2013, my identical twin daughters were about to finish their junior year of high school. ACTs and SATs had been taken and the work of college planning had begun in earnest. I was a complete wreck. My daughters are my only children. I believe I am on this earth to be their mother. Everything about raising these girls and watching them grow, has been an honor and a treasure. Though identical twins, they are quite different in their personalities and interests, but both are utterly delightful and maybe most poignantly - they are hilarious. Together, we laugh our butts off. My life has had more than its share of tragedy, and Rosa and Grace have been my tonic. Immediately after the girls were born, I actually told their dad that he'd better "reserve the padded room now, because when they leave for college, I'm gonna need it." When I saw this truck, I saw my padded room.

Editing

I cropped it to make the shot more level. As I said, I don't remember even stopping when I took the photo.

In my camera bag

Ooh, in my camera bag, I carry a Fujifilm X-A1 camera, a Fujifilm f35mm F1.4 R lens, and a Fujifilm XC 50-230 mm F 4.5-6.7 lens. With these three pieces of equipment, I get beautiful mid-and long-distance range photos. Honestly, my iphone gives me my best macro shots. I also carry lots of charged batteries, a battery charger, and multiple 16 GB memory cards so I don't have to carry my computer around to empty cards.

Feedback

My advice as it pertains to this particular photo is shoot what speaks to you and hope you find yourself in the right place and time to do so. Also, carry a camera at all times so you can shoot when you inevitably find yourself in the right place and ttime.
