Location
I took the photo at Wicken Fen , Cambridgeshire. A National Trust reserve near where I live.Time
It was taken around 6-30 am , I was actually looking for barn owls when this young Roe deer came bounding towards me.Lighting
The light at 6-30 am was pretty good as it was a nice sunny morning. The subject was side lit, which I think helped give an almost 3d effect to the subject.Equipment
Shot using Canon 1dx mkll , 500mm f4 lens with X1.4 convertor. Giving effective 700mm. f6.3 / 1/1000 / ISO 800.Inspiration
I love getting up early , its the best time of day for finding wildlife & likely the kindest light.Editing
A little noise reduction to the background & a little selective sharpening to the subject, otherwise very little to do on this one.In my camera bag
In addition to my 1dx mkll / 500mm f4, I carry the X1.4 convertor. Also have with me Canon 7d mkll with 70-200 f2.8 for anything closer. Always have my Gitzo tripod with Sirus gimbal head.Feedback
Capturing wildlife on the move is never easy. Natural light really is in my opinion the key. When its bright I can keep my shutter speed up to @ 1/1000 to freeze the movement keeping the subject sharp. Also it allows me to shoot @ f6.3 + giving me enough depth of field on frame filling shots to keep the key features in focus. Both the above while keeping the ISO down to a respectable number preventing too much noise. I also like to use a tripod where possible especially when using the 500mm long lens. The other main demand is lots to patience when doing wildlife....
