Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in Provence, on Etang de Berre some time in the winter.

Time

The picture was taken in bright sunlight, late morning

Lighting

Harsh light and moving small subject require manual exposure with high speed shutter. Verifying proper exposure (LCD screen and histograms) along shooting session allows for corrections before it is too late and subject is gone!!!

Equipment

CAnon 7D Mark II and Sigma 800mm F.5.6 HSM with monopod.

Inspiration

A group of wintering black-necked grebes in winter plumage was actively fishing in a small harbour. Harsh lighting conditions and bird hyperactivity had me take about 500 pictures in a bit over 2 hours. A few of them came out nicely!

Editing

No post-processing

In my camera bag

2 canon bodies (7DMK2, 1DMK4 or 5DSR), Canon 500mm or Sigma800mm, Canon 70-700 and 24-70 and Tamron 15-30. Strobe, monopod and tripod.

Feedback

It takes patience and luck to get the right moment captured. Getting low and close to water surface is critical to isolate subject from background.
