Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in a hotel in Orange County, California.

Time

I took this in the afternoon around 2pm.

Lighting

I really enjoy working with natural and available lighting. This shot was solely natural lighting coming in from a large window that had sheer white curtains (a perfect soft box).

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon 5D with a 50mm Canon lens.

Inspiration

This model from out of town called me at the last minute and wanted to get a few shots done. I didn't really give her any direction since she was a natural at posing. She gave me this pose and I got the shot.

Editing

I did really minor post-processing. I had adjusted the white balance in camera, so I only tweaked the exposure and luminosity in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

The Canon 5D is my go-to body. I knew this shoot was going to be in close quarters, so I only took the 50mm lens. If we had been somewhere that I could have gotten a little distance between the model and me, then I would have also brought my 85mm lens.

Feedback

Don't be afraid of natural light, especially if you have a way to control it a bit (like with the sheer white curtains). Not every indoor shoot with a model has to involve setting up studio lights. With digital, there's no excuse not to take lots of exposures. This little mini shoot took maybe a 30-45 minutes and I captured around 200 images in that time.
