I am a keen amatuer photographer and I took this photo using a telephoto lens in my friends garden while we were having a BBQ a few summers ago . Everyone is fascinated by owls eyes and I wanted to capture the owl look from Zeus, as he wandered around. Its one of my very early shots with what was at the time my new camera and first SLR :)Time
I was in a friends garden around lunch time for a BBQ. I always carry my camera with me and the plan was to take some shots of her daughter.Lighting
I am completley self taught and cant remember ever using flash... I havent learned how to use unnatrual light and again this may be something I need to learn but I actually dont like the unnatural tones of added lighting so I am always looking for light and follow it with a passion.Equipment
Hand held using my cannon 550d and telephoto lens 70 -270. I rarely if ever use a tripod which of course is a sin but you do develop good breath holding techniques . Its probably the only time I am ever still which is probably a blessing for others !Inspiration
I like to play with composition and mostly take what I think looks right . I dont follow rules as such. Actually the shot was not really planned to be of Zeus that day as I was at the BBQ and was going to take pictures of my friends daughter but I became captivated by Zeus. I am sure you know what I mean when I say sometimes the scene just takes over you . Thats often how I am when I see something I want to capture.Editing
I have used a little sharpening and boosting of colour . Again self taught and I flick between Picasa and photoscape mostly ... recently I have added Lightroom to my post processing suite although I only used Picasa for this shot as at the time was only using free software. I really would like to take a course in photoshop at some point. In my camera bag
I am really bad and really rough with my equipment which of course is another sin. I think equipment is my work horse that allows me to be creative so to be honest I often actually dont have a bag.... ( oh dear thats three sins !). If I do have one with me it would have another lens in it , spare battery but usually my spare SD card is in my Bra !Feedback
Just take the shot! My sister is also a keen photographer but she over thinks things and hesitates and then the moment is gone. She is much more technically competent than me and has really researched the technical side of how to take an image . I just play with my camera and then you get to know what works and what wont. I am a little bit nervous now of learning too much technical as I am scared it will stop my creative side which is why I took up photography in the first place
