Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Christchurch, New Zealand on the New Brighton Pier. This is a place some of my family lived for sometime and I use to go there a lot when I was younger. It's a beautiful spot, you can walk along the beach for miles and walk out right to the end of the pier.

Time

This was definitely not one of my favorite photos at all. It took me a while to warm up to it. This was taken in the afternoon just after mid day - 1:52pm on the 4th of October 2015. It was overcast windy and cold but I had wanted to take some photos so I really had just taken a few shots to see how they turned out.

Lighting

As we were by the sea it was naturally quite bright even though the sun wasn't out fully. You can kind of see that the light was trying to get through the clouds. I did use a filter in this and I love the way it makes the shot look more gloomy and dim, it completely changes the mood from the original shot.

Equipment

This was shot with a 400D Canon camera with a EFS 18-55mm lens. I didn't use a tripod and I didn't need the flash because it was naturally light.

Inspiration

I was out with my family and I almost always bring my camera with me just in case I see something and have to take a photo. We decided to go to the end of the New Brighton Pier because we hadn't been there in so long and I just took some shots. I love taking photos of the sea and other landscapes so when I got there I couldn't resist.

Editing

I almost always edit my photos even if it's just putting a filter over it. I adjusted some of the lighting and played around with some filters, when I like a filter I save each photo with the different filters so I have at least ten different pictures of this one shot. I think for this particular photo I used the Sepia filter.

In my camera bag

I always keep my camera in there. I use to have the 400D Canon camera but I have recently upgraded to a 1300D Canon. I usually pack my EFS 18-55mm canon lens, my second hand EF 55-200mm canon lens, and my 75-300mm canon lens. If I'm going somewhere over night I'll take my battery charger if not then I'll make sure my battery is fully charged.

Feedback

This was take near the sea and up quite high so it was rather windy. The whether does change a lot, it can be windy one moment and calm the next. When I took this shot it probably wasn't the best conditions but I still managed to get a good shot, have patience, try different angles, wait for the lighting to change. Also take more than a few shots. The more shots you take the higher chances you have of taking a photo that you love. Just go for it really.
