The Maya lived for thousand of years next to Atitlan. Mayas know that the lake cannot be controlled, it does what it wants. It goes up, and down, without a reason. When Americans came they didn't listen to the Mayan warnings and build houses as close as possible to the shore. Mayas still don't understand why Americans build houses so close to the shore, just to see them destroyed by the lake.
