Behind The Lens

Location

The Bahamas out of Freeport. I was on the Bahamas Aggressor (part of the Aggressor Fleet) live aboard in May 2016.

Time

Approx. 2:00 PM. The seas were flat calm. It was a perfect as well as all of the days to dive & photograph sharks.

Lighting

INON twin 240 strobes spread wide. The twin strobes allow for no shadows while using a wide angle lens.

Equipment

The equipment used was a CANON 7D body. Lens used was a CANON 10-22 wide angle lens because of the image quality this lens produces. Images while using this lens for underwater use are always....razor sharp. I use CANON equipment exclusively for camera bodies and CANON lenses. It's the glass or the lens that makes or breaks the photo image. CANON makes the most number of different lenses for the work I do as well as capturing razor sharp images. Also, CANON has the best support in the business for the products they sell hands down over every other manufacturer.

Inspiration

I wanted to take an image showing the shark first in relation to the reef as well as the ships hull shooting in a vertical format.

Editing

I shoot everything in a RAW format. At the time of processing the only thing I may tweak, change or modify is the White Balance. I don't believe in "Photo-shopping every single image to death. The only time I use Photoshop is in eliminating backscatter (floating suspended particles in the water). The most important aspect of any photography is knowing what your camera system will or will not do. If you need to use Photoshop for your majority number of images, may I suggest reading the owners manual again until you become the master of your camera system. Until you learn what your system will do or not do....consider yourself a "snap shot artist." Shooting anything underwater is a very unforgiving environment & the learning curve is steep.

In my camera bag

CANON 7D bodies, Nauticam camera housing, Canon lenses for wide angle, macro work as well as Sigma 17-70 zoom lens that fills the need to have a lens that will fill the need between a wide angle & macro lens. INON 240 strobes. INON makes strobes just for underwater use. These strobes are compact but put out the most powerful flash output as well as having the shortest recycling time. Also worth noting is a supply of extra O-Rings for each piece of equipment.

Feedback

(1) Use the camera equipment chosen by professionals & not snap shot artists. (2) Take the time & invest in yourself on becoming the master of your camera. (3) Realize the learning curve will be steep. (3) Become an excellent diver first before attempting underwater photography. (4) The QUALITY of your images will always surpass the quantity of your subjects all the time. (5) Remember to have fun! The U/W world is a very amazing place & enjoy the adventure. (6) Shoot all your images in a RAW Format. (7) Learn Manual Control Settings of your camera. (8) If you shoot everything using the cameras Auto or Program setting...shooting on manual generally surpasses anything shot on Auto or Program. (9) The camera is only as smart as the person using the camera.
