I took this photo in my home, in my bathtub! I was straddling the bathtub, balanced on the ledge and looking down at my subject. I'm a self taught photographer - so this creative shoot that I did was alot of learning and the opportunity to push myself in more challenging situations!Time
My model and I got together one gloomy evening- the overcast weather definitely lead to the somber nature of our photoshoot! This image was taken inside so the time of day didn't affect the lighting at all. But there are several others in the series that were taken outside.Lighting
I used my ambient lighting in my bathroom which was incandescent but very minimal light. So to make up for the low lighting situation I also aimed my flash at the ceiling above me and created a softer bounce flash effect (You can see the catch light from the flash in her eyes)Equipment
Canon 7D Mk II - Tamron 24-75mm - Canon 520 EX II FlashInspiration
The model in the photograph came to me for help portraying a personal vision of hers. She had been struggling with anxiety and wanted to capture some of those complex feelings in a tangible way. She gave me the general premise and I thought that a dark and edgy milk bath would suit the subject perfectly! I was hoping to get a liquid black milk bath but I couldn't source the proper materials in time which is too bad. I would like the opportunity to do it again! I know the feeling of drowning or feeling overwhelmed by emotion - so I chose to use the murky milk bath to portray that feeling of helplessness.Editing
Yes I did! I did my usual tweeks to the raw file: adjusted white balance, exposure, blacks, tones and other basic edits in ACR and then opened it up in photoshop went through several series of edits to achieve this black and white. I also did some basic skin edits as well as going to town with the dodge and burn. I like the gritty and more contrast black and whites so played around with several of my actions sets to achieve this look.In my camera bag
I literally cannot functions without my 24-70mm lens. It's my baby and I take it everywhere. It's on my camera 95% of the time. I like on the low end if I get up close it has this ooey-gooey feel of emotion to it. I keep it on my 7DMKii and the two of them make music for me. I would love to upgrade my body sometime but honestly the ii is so sturdy and does its work like a horse I wouldn't kick it to the curb. I do most of my shooting without a flash so it doesn't often come with me on shoots unless I plan to shoot indoorsFeedback
If you think it's crazy, its probably because you're doing it right. Listen to that voice that says "what if" instead of the one that says "you can't do that. no one does that." The what if voice is your inner heart. So listen! Climb a tree. Look upside down. Walk around in a circle. Life is a little crazy so if you think you're going to capture "that moment" by standing in the same spot everyone else is chances are you'll miss the beauty. Take a moment and breath. Breath with your subject - feel their pain or their joy or their sorrow. Let them be and press that shutter when you feel your hearts sync for a minute.
