This was my very first image I printed in my first B-W photography course about 15 years ago. I always enjoyed the juxtaposition of this conservatively dressed elderly gentleman quietly sitting next to his very loud and opinionated, if not controversial sign. When I asked if I could take his photograph, he graciously allowed me to shoot this shot. I went back several times over the years to find him, but I never saw him again. I believe he passed.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in San Francisco’s financial district as part of an environmental portrait assignment in my first photography course many moons ago.

Time

This was shot in the middle a busy weekday afternoon.

Lighting

It was a typical overcast day in San Francisco, so the lightning was fairly flat...perfect for b/w.

Equipment

I shot this using my first camera and only film camera the Nikon N55 using the kit lens that came with it.

Inspiration

I loved the juxtaposition of this very mild mannered, well dressed gentlemen and his very outspoken and somewhat belligerent sign.

Editing

I printed this in the darkest with quite a bit of dodging and burning before eventually scanning many years later.

In my camera bag

Back then it was just the camera with some extra film. These days I try to travel as light as possible.

Feedback

Common courtesy goes a long ways, ask permission before you start shooting.
