The mortally wounded Lion Monument in Lucerne, Switzerland was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1819 as a memorial for the mercenary soldiers from central Switzerland who lost their lives while serving the French King Louis XVI during the French Revolution. Mark Twain pretty well reflected my thoughts about this beautiful and incredibly sad sculpture when he said it was, "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world".
