Yams are an intregal part od social life on Kiriwina Island in Papua New Guinea and are still considered valuable as a system of wealth and prestige. The annual yam harvest is quite the event. Yams are stored in Yam Huts like this one. Only the Paramount Chief (Chief of the Island) can decorate his Yam Hut with vivid colors. Village chiefs may have decorate Yam Hut,but not as elaborately. All others are forbidden to paint or decorate their Yam Huts.
