This photo was taken on the grounds of a Manor House near Dudley, UK. The grounds feature vast fields, woodland and this beautiful small lake and stream running through, absolute perfect place for any budding photographer.Time
This image was taken in the late afternoon, we were on the way home from visiting family and thought we'd stop by here as it was on the route home. My camera never leaves my side, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to get some great shots.Lighting
As I was under the canopy of trees, there was quite a lot of shadow cast down where I was standing, the only light was breaking through above the lake, I wanted the light to surround the trees and make a silhouette of the girl.Equipment
The shot was taken on my newly purchased Canon 5d Mark iii with 24-105 f4 lens, I'd only had this camera for a few weeks at the time of this shot so I was still getting to grips!Inspiration
I was out with my girlfriend in the rain taking long exposure shots of the stream using the tripod, she had wandered a little up the stream to look over the lake as I was down taking my shots, I look up to see her standing looking across the lake, the tripod was still attached to the bottom of the camera as I quickly took this shot before she moved!Editing
This image had the basics done, curves to correct the slightly over exposed sky and I took down the shadows slightly just to make the highlights pop. Using Photoshop's dodge tool, I added some highlights down the stream just to add a leading line following diagonally across the image. Finally, I decided to change the whole tome of the image, I made the foliage the warm orange colour, this gave a much warmer, more inviting feel to the image. In my camera bag
99% of the time I take the 5d mkiii and 24-105 lens and nothing else, I don't like being weighed down by gear, so I travel light, a lot of the time I don't even take a bag, it's just me and the camera, this makes me light and nimble to run and grab a shot without worrying about a bag flapping about or something falling out.Feedback
I can't really give advice on capturing a similar image, is shot was a split second decision, I saw a chance and took it; the best advice I can give is look at your surroundings, keep an eye on what's happening around you, even if you're focused on something, the best shots are usually unfolding behind you, you have to be sharp and ready to see it so you don't miss out on a great opportunity.
