Taken on 21 October 2015 during a local event called 'Strontrace'. Ships need to cross as fast as they can the IJsselmeer (largest lake in the Netherlands) from the city called Workum to a town called Warmond carrying a few bags of manure. Those that sail are bound to sails only and historic ships. modern engines and modern ships are excluded from the event. Ships most commonly used are "skûtsjes" and "tjalken", the one in the picture is a historic fishing boat. The 'WR' part on it's bow is where the ship was originally based at and the number is the number of that specific ship. For this ship it would be 48th fishing boat in the fleet. The return trip they bring back flower bulbs which will be given to the elderly on Friday that same week. The ships sail non-stop until they are back in Workum. The voyage requires experience, skill and stamina to complete it on time. The ships sail out on Monday and the first ones are expected back at Wednesday. The small boats are used for fishing boats as they were in the past, which is a separate part of that whole week and the fish they catch is sold on the city square to the highest bidder on Saturday (although refrigeration is NOT used, so fish is sold at the end of the day when the fishing boats do get back. Which is from Wednesday up to Saturday)
