Behind The Lens

Location

Taken deep in the Heart of Texas in my home town of Mason. And I mean IN my hometown. I live in a town of 2000 where country living is the norm. Lot's of folks have horses, chickens...and even a longhorn or 2.

Time

I took this shot a couple of blocks from my house while on a walk with my wife after work...around 6 p.m. This guy was just grazing and looked up at us to make sure we weren't there to cause trouble.

Lighting

This ol' guy was backlight with a lot of late afternoon sun which created a nice glow on his hide and horns.

Equipment

I used a Fuji X-T10 with a 55-200mm lens at 200mm and f4.8. It was handheld as I was not really looking for shot. He just showed up!

Inspiration

His huge horns and great attitude.

Editing

Yes! With backlit light, I had to raise the shadows and increase the dynamic range in order to get the face and ears detail to be more visible. I also reduce the saturation of the grass to create a more monochromatic image that highlights the beast's orange coat.

In my camera bag

I recently switched from Nikon to Fuji. I'm not a committed enough photographer to carry a burdensome load with me everywhere but the Fuji is so light, I can carry the camera and a lens around my neck or on my belt and not even notice it's there. I have a small bag which I usually carry my Fuji X-T10, 10-20mm, 18-55mm, and 55-200mm. I also have a 14mm f2.8 for astrophotography and a fantastic 35mm f2 for street stuff, family events, and as a nice little walking-around lens. I usually have a mini-tripod, remote, black glass filter, extra batteries, and a Nissin i40 flash (perfect size for this camera) and Qflash wireless flash connectors.

Feedback

This particular experienced reinforced in my mind the need to ALWAYS carry a camera with me. I never know when the perfect shot will emerge from everyday experiences of life.
