Location
I took this just outside of Queenstown, NZ. A city famous for its amazing scenery and epic tourist attractions.Time
After a few days of adventures, we finally made it into Queenstown around 3pm. I was disappointed to be driving through such an amazing landscape with such unflattering light, but the sun managed to find a spot to break through the cloud and it presented a great opportunity to take this shotLighting
Nature photography can be difficult, simply because regardless of how much planning You put in, You just can't control the scene. Often all it takes is a wee cloud to roll in and spoil the lighting. This happened to Me this day, but through being patient, a break in the cloud came through and I was able to pull off a reasonable photo.Equipment
Canon 700D, with the standard 18-55mm lens. Taken with no filters or tripodInspiration
I caught a glimpse of the scene as I drove across the bridge and had to park up and walk back to take a better look. Then it was just a matter of waiting for the boat to complete the scene.Editing
Just basic lightroom alterations. Mostly i just brought down the highlights to give the sky some definition, and lifted the vibrance slightly to bring out the colour of the water and trees in the Canyon. In my camera bag
Obviously my trusty Canon 700D, I also never leave without a selection of ND filters (I'm a big fan of long exposure shots). Otherwise just the basic stuff, and a very good cleaning kit, just because I'm terrible at getting dust all over my lens and in between the buttons.Feedback
Timing is everything. It's important to have the shot in mind and be ready to go when the moment presents its self. In this situation I only had the one shot, I knew where I wanted the jet boat to be, it was all just a matter of patience and timing.
