Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a small game reserve outside of East London, in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It is one of the very first photographs that I took at the start of what turned into a passion rather than just a hobby.

Time

This photograph was taken on an early morning game drive through the game reserve. The sun was just started to go higher into the sky, so the lighting was really great. The morning is the best time to see animals and I came across this Impala ram with the rest of the herd as they were grazing.

Lighting

Early morning lighting is the best time to get those perfect shots in.

Equipment

I only used my Canon 1200D for this photograph. I shot this image using a 75-300mm lens. Due to the fact that I was driving, I balanced my camera on my door as I had my window down.

Inspiration

I really have a passion for wildlife, the outdoors and photography so I am always spending time in nature. If you sit with animals for a long period of time, they almost forget that you are there and they just go about their lives, which sometimes enables you to get some special shots.

Editing

Yes I did, I changed the image into black and white and I adjusted the exposure and lighting slightly to further enhance this photograph.

In my camera bag

I now shoot with my Canon 300-600mm lense which is super heavy. This is my go to lense for wildlife. I keep my smaller lenses in my bag incase I need to shoot some macro images. I also always keep a spare memory card in my back, because it won't be the first time that I have filled a card on a safari through the African bush.

Feedback

I suggest you go out as much as you can as no two days in the bush are the same as any other so you are always presented with new opportunities and sightings that you haven't experienced. Be patient. Some animals may sleep or eat for hours on eat before they decide to get up and move around or do something spectacular. It's always so peaceful just sitting and watching them no matter what they doing.
