Behind The Lens

Location

I am a professional photographer and teach photography and video productions at Stamford International University, Bangkok Thailand. This was one shot of a series i shot for one of our students to show many types of lighting settings, from high to low key.

Time

This is a studio shot, so time of day is not important.

Lighting

I wanted to show how you can change the dramatic impact of a shot or image just by subtle positioning of a single light source with very low fill or reflector.

Equipment

Nikon D7100 with one studio strobe/flash with one small piece of white plastic as a fill.

Inspiration

I love dramatic lighting of such subjects as tribal/ethnic people and Sandra wanted to wear her traditional village dress.

Editing

This shot was set as a monochrome in the camera's profiles, as I believe that if your intention is to shoot B&W, then you should set your camera in that mode and not convert from a colour profile, so this shot has not been post-processed.

In my camera bag

Nikon D7100, with 16-85, 12-24, 50 F1.4 fixed, 80-200 F2.8 and 24 F2.8.

Feedback

Always meter off the brightest part of the image and focus on the eye closest to the lens axis. Also there might be a need to block any light that could leak onto the background, so card or any other material would need to be used to direct the light at the model and no where else. I also follow the rule of thirds by positioning the model so her eyes are just off center and place the model to the right or left of frame for a correctly balanced composition.
