Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the graveyard at Historic St. Mary's city in Maryland. I saw this huge tree there, with the bark all coming off and figured it needed to have its picture taken. I laid down on my back and shot this picture, as my friend took pictures of me in my awkward position trying to get the shot.

Time

The photo was actually taken at mid-day.

Lighting

It was an overcast day, so the lighting was pretty soft and I could get away with shooting at mid-day.

Equipment

Here's what I used to take this picture: Nikon D810, and Nikkor 14-24mm, f/2.8.

Inspiration

I've always liked seeing photographs which put a different perspective on the world, like an aerial cityscape, or a shot looking straight in a dense forest. I saw this tree, and figured it needed to be shot looking up at it, to showcase it's grandiosity.

Editing

I didn't really do anything more than basic editing in Lightroom for this photo.

In my camera bag

Here's what I typically carry in my bag: Nikon D810 Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8 Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 Lee big stopper B+W 4-stop ND filter Circular polarizer And a very basic tripod.

Feedback

When you go out shooting, try to look at the objects around you from a different perspective. I think it helps me find cool shots, even when the lighting isn't all that great.
