Behind The Lens

Location

I was working as a second shooter for a beautiful and intimate wedding. The bride and groom chose to have their ceremony at the historic 1886 Cresent Hotel & Spa in the Victorian village of Eureka Springs, Arkansas -recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations.

Time

This was one of my favorite shots from the wedding. The bride and her daughter were getting ready to go down to the beautiful lobby for some photos by herself with the other photographer and I was waiting for the groom and his son to come up to get ready. It was around 4:30 pm on a lovely mid-June afternoon.

Lighting

This window in this room looked out over the courtyard below facing the northwest. There had been some rain showers that afternoon so it was a bit cloudy, and the natural light coming through the window set a perfect scene for this tender moment between the bride and her daughter.

Equipment

At the time of this photo, I was using a Nikon D7100 and a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens. This lens soaked up the soft light coming from the window.

Inspiration

Traditionally, we see photos of the mothers helping the daughters into their dress. The bride wanted to include her daughter as much as possible so we suggested that she help her mom with the zipper in the back. It was such a tender moment between the two of them and I loved the angle from which I captured it.

Editing

I shoot in RAW, and minimally processed this photo, adjusting the contrast, clarity, shadows and highlights slightly and then made a few split-toning adjustments.

In my camera bag

For daytime or event shooting, I always have my Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens, my Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 and a Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens along with my Nikon D7100 body. I have a great love for shooting the night sky, so often times I will also have my Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 lens in tow. I recently purchased a Sony Alpha 7s body so it is now a full-time resident in my kit, and my tripod is always in my car.

Feedback

I'd had the pleasure of spending most of the afternoon with the bride and her daughter so I'd seen how close they were and paid attention to how they interacted with one another. My best advice for capturing moments like this is to try to just try to be as unobtrusive as possible and let the moment happen. There was very little direction for this shot, we only asked them to stand in front of the window. The rest just happened naturally.
