Location
I took this outside of my apartment on the top floor of my building. The light that shapes her beautifully delicate body comes from a skylight above.Time
The sun was high up in the sky at around 1:30pm but it was slightly cloudy. During the shoot, we had a mix between strong sunlight and diffused clouded sunlight.Lighting
It was all done with natural lighting from a skylight on the top of my apartment building. For this particular shot, the clouds rolled over so the light was more diffused. Basically, I had a large soft box with the clouds diffusing the sun and then the skylight channeling the light down.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark III with the 85mm f/1.2 II at 2.0. I love using this focal length as it's not too close to create distortions, yet close enough to make it easy to communicate with my model as well as give that pleasant separation from the background.Inspiration
Susannah is a contemporary dancer in Montreal and is really good at moving and posing. The whole shoot was like this, where we would spot beautiful lighting, run under it, and shoot.Editing
I did minor retouching to smooth out the hair and remove some stray hairs on her shoulder. Then I used Color Efex Pro to turn it into black and white. In my camera bag
It depends what kind of gig I'm doing. When I'm doing a portrait shoot, I'm either shooting with my 5D Mark III or 1DX and then the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art, Sigma 50 f/1.4 Art, Canon 85mm f/1.2 II, and a reflector. When I'm doing an event coverage, it's usually the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 II and the 600-RT. When it's weddings, I shoot with both cameras and have everything mentioned above + the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II. You have to be prepared for anything during weddings and the 24-70 and 70-200 combo allows you to be flexible and agile (in capturing different focal lengths, not carrying your gear haha).Feedback
When shooting outside and light can be variable, having a team that can spot good lighting with you is super important. As lighting determines the what shows up on camera, spotting the right kind of light to shape your photo (highlights, shadows, lines, curves, etc.) makes or breaks the picture.
