Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my University Studio.

Time

Thats the great thing about studio! It doesn't matter on the time of day!

Lighting

I wantedthe lighting to focus on the front of the model, using two soft boxes with a 1:2 ratio to illuminate one side of the face more than the other to create soft shadows.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 70D, using an 18-270mm lens. Two elemchrome studio lights with soft boxes were used to light up the model in the studio environment.

Inspiration

My University assignment was based on photographing a product as well as a a product in a portrait being used by the model. I decided to use a red scarf for mine purely based on this models amazing blue eyes, i wanted to contrast the two colours. The reason the scarf is wrapped around was to show a different use of the scarf other then the around the neck wear.

Editing

I shoot all my photos in RAW which normally would requiremsome sort of post editing. For this photo i mainly focused on adjusting the levels and curves to create more shadows and to highlight the model and scarf. I also edited the eyes a little to bring them back to the bright blue when first shot. Then to finish the image off in went through with colour correcting to just make sure the red, blue and skin tones were adjusted properly.

In my camera bag

First of all my Canon EOS 70D, and with this i normally take at least 3 lenses, my standard Tamron 18-270mm for everyday use, my Tamron 10-24 ultra-wide zoom for my landscape shots, and finally my Sigma 50mm Art lens, because im a sucker for very low depth of field!

Feedback

First of all decide on your model, this will change the whole lighting set up just based onnthe models face shape, once you have your model decided, plannout their outfit and how you want your hair and makeup then start adjusting your lights around their face or posture. Play around a little with lighting ratios and positions, you might even achieve a better photo then you expected!
