Great Shot. B&W, understated but looks like perilous fun! Hence I awarded it the winner in my challenge.

This photo was taken in my hometown of Birmingham, MI at the annual fair. I am a self-taught beginner photographer, so every experience is a chance to learn something new. I went to the fair thinking, 'lots of color...bright lights...dizzying motion...this is going to be awesome!" And it was, but when I looked at the photos that I captured, I felt bombarded by exactly what I thought was going to be so great. The lights and colors and motion actually made every image look chaotic to me...thus, the fast shutter mono. I was hoping this one captured the tension of motion with very little motion blur to distract from the focus.Time
This photo was taken mid-afternoon on the first day of the fair. I was actually just going to check out the set up and get some ideas for taking photos the following day, but I took a few photos anyway, because, hey...there weren't a million people there and I had a little extra time.Lighting
It was a bright, sunny day with some really cool clouds...fortunately the sun was behind me when I framed this shot, so that the subjects were well lit, but I could use a pretty fast shutter.Equipment
This photo was shot with a Canon 600D, stock 18-55mm/f/3.5 lens. No other equipment was involved.Inspiration
I really liked how the rides were sort of stacked from this angleEditing
I do all of my post-processing in Aurora HDR...whether I'm working with bracketed shots or not (this was not bracketed). I first processed this in color, then decided that the color pulled the eye all over the place, meaning that there was no clear focus. I then tried a selective color version, which I liked better than the full color, but that seemed to create almost too much of a focus on the Skater ride. When I decided to do it in b&w, I bumped up the contrast and the detail a bit and then desaturated the whole thing entirely. So, in sort of a Goldilocks way, I opted for the mono...there, the focus seemed 'just right.'In my camera bag
I'm still pretty new to photography (got my first DSLR for my birthday last year), so I haven't really collected much equipment. I shoot with a Canon 600D with a stock (18-55mm/ f/3.5) lens.Feedback
Carnivals are awesome...there's so much stimulation (color, lights, movement)...really fun to shoot. But, one thing I learned is that what looks great in the context of the fair, may look less great in a single frame (many of the photos that I took that weekend were disappointing testaments to this). What I will do the next time I have the opportunity to take photos at a carnival is to look for the big shapes and how they fit together in interesting ways. Also, I only spent a little time taking "street-like" photos at this fair...I think I'll try to have a little more patience and take more photos of the people...LOTS of drama at a carnival!
