Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Cataloochee Valley, N.C. This male was certainly guarding his harem, and bared his teeth at us menacingly. But we were safe, we were across the street with other people and also the park ranger nearby!

Time

Taken at near dusk on a beautiful Fall day.

Lighting

Elk come out in the early morning (fog is great), and at dusk, which are the best times to take their portraits anyway.

Equipment

Shot with my Olympus E-M1, 75-300 lens, on a tripod.

Inspiration

The weather was so lovely, and the evening light just about perfect. There were many Elk to choose from, but this one really caught my eye because of how protective he was of his harem.

Editing

Basic Lightroom processing, then I used Topaz Impression to soften it even more.

In my camera bag

I love my Olympus mirrorless camera, and I have 5 lenses. I use the 75-300 a lot, but my favorite is the 12-40 2.8 Pro. I also love the macro because it's so versatile, and my 45 1.8.

Feedback

Elk have recently, in the last few years, been re-introduced to the valley areas of North Carolina and Tennessee. The area is part of the Great Smokey Mountains, and is gorgeous any time of year, but the Elk are particularly photogenic in the Fall.
