Behind The Lens

Location

Spirit Island, Maligne Lake, nr Jasper, Alberta, Canada

Time

It was early afternoon in September

Lighting

The light in the Rockies is usually superb

Equipment

EOS 5D Mk3 with Canon 24-70mm F2.8 Mk2 lens handheld at 25mm ISO 250 1/320 sec at F9

Inspiration

Spirit Island is one of the iconic views in Jasper National Park. One gets a speedboat to the island (which takes about 30 minutes) and get about 15 minutes there before the 30 minute return trip.

Editing

Horizon straightened A couple of jet trails cloned out and adjustments to contrast in ColourEfexPro

In my camera bag

It depends what I'm doing. This photo was taken in 2012 when my only cameras were a Canon 5D3 and a 7D For this trip I took them both - the 5D3 with the 24-70mm L and the 7D with the Canon 100-400 Mk1. I still have the 5D3 but have replaced the 7D with the 7D Mk2 and the 100-400mm with the Mk2 version of that (which is a truly stunning lens) I also now have both a Canon 1DX and a 1DX Mk2 as I do a lot of aircraft photography in the summer and bird photography in the winter

Feedback

The Icefields Parkway (from Calgary to Jasper in the Canadian Rockies) is an incredible photographic location, both for landscape photographers with its mountains, blue lakes, and glaciers, and for wildlife, particularly when the brown and grizzly bears are feeding up for their winter hibernation. There is also an abundance of wildfowl, elk and similar.
