Behind The Lens

Location

While walking in Prospect Park, I spotted this little mischievous creature and had to walk closer to ensure I wasn't imagining something. Sure enough, almost above him, he peered at me as I peered at him with a wide smile and captured this image. He had obviously just tapped the water (from the rings in the image), though he didn't spend long with his head out of the pipe, soon again he disappeared from view.

Time

In the early evening, this racoon was biding his time for dusk when they swim across the water and then eat food from the garbage.

Lighting

The early evening light of a bright New York summer meant the lighting hit this little creature perfectly.

Equipment

Canon 600D is my camera of choice and simply hand held. I never use a flash in daylight.

Inspiration

I love animals. It's simple. And racoons are rambunctious little creatures who make most smile. I don't come from a country where they exist, so I had to get a shot of this sweet fellow, especially as he was 'hiding' from view of so many people walking by in the park.

Editing

Increased the contrast slightly, but overall, very minimal post-processing.

In my camera bag

I usually walk around with my Canon 600D held tightly in my hand, hoping to capture whatever I glimpse. Or if all else fails my iPhone.

Feedback

Ensure your settings are ready for the light you might encounter. From your ISO to your shutter speed and Fstop, you need to set these as soon as you get into the environment you are wanting to shoot. That way, if anything comes up unexpectedly, your equipment is ready and you can just shoot. The first equipment one can have to capture anything is by simply using your eyes and looking around. Be curious of the world in a way most others aren't and you will see things that are worth capturing. The amount of people who simply walked by this piece of the lakeside without glancing more than a second was frequent. I stopped, I really studied all that I could in all directions when I noticed this racoon behind the plant. Be aware and look all around. You'll get some amazing shots just by looking more.
