Found growing wild in woodland, scrub and roadsides.
The roots and leaves have been used over the centuries as an astringent, diuretic and as a laxative. The fruits are reputed to be invaluable for fevers.
The fruits have several cosmetic benefits; the juice applied to the teeth and left for several minutes, then washed off with warm water, with a pinch of bicarbonate of soda added, removes discolouration and stains. Cut fruit wiped on the face after washing whitens the skin and removes light sun-burn, for badly sun-burnt skin the fruit should be well rubbed into the skin, left for 30 minutes and washed off with warm water which has a few drops of tincture of benzoin added. Soap and other cleansers shouldn't be used.
