Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at school in the darkroom all the way up on the fifth floor in the art department. I was taking a series of black and white photos for my photography folio which needed to be completed pretty soon and was running out of time. So I got organised, grabbed a friend to model for me and went into the darkroom for my shoot.

Time

I remember how it was way too bright in all the other classrooms even after I had frantically pulled all the blinds down as it was in the morning (around 10) so I had decided to go into the darkroom for a more serious and strong black and white image.

Lighting

I wanted this image to be really strong and bold in shadows and have a really high contrast between the shadows and the lighter areas. Therefore I shot this photo in a darkroom to get really strong shadows and only used one movable tungsten light to light up my model's face. I moved the light around and played with it to see what kind of shadows I could get and tried to compose an interesting looking set of shadows where you can only see the model's eye on one half of his face.

Equipment

I shot this photo using a Nikon d3300 in a darkroom with 1 flexible (but really annoying to move) tungsten light.

Inspiration

Well to be honest with you I was taking a series of photos for my portfolio for photography at school. However I had done my research and found some photos of some famous black and white photographers which inspired me to try and re-shoot the same as they did and invent some of my own (this photo was of my own, not re-made).

Editing

No not much apart from turning the photo into black and white (I never directly take my photos in black and white because then you cannot get them in colour).

In my camera bag

My Nikon d3300, a small leather bag with a macro/wide angle lens attachment. A cleaning cloth for all them annoying smudges on the lens. Filters for different occasional shots (even though i don't know what they do really). A cable to plug in to my trusty computer and upload all my photos (even though I do that by simply slotting in my SD card) and a cable to connect to the TV to share with family and friends during a photo sesh. I also carry my camera charger so that I can charge it on the go if there is a socket nearby and some snacks like a kit kat or snickers bar.

Feedback

The setting is really important, I used a darkroom to get really strong shadows and just 1 light and moved it about to see what I could get, I have taken many other photos just using this one light in the darkroom except I changed the model and the angle of the photo and the direction of the light onto the model.
