Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Malibu, California under a pier at Paradise Cove and was fun to capture even though I got splashed with sea foam .

Time

This photo will always hold a special place in my heart because it was one of my first shots that captured movement. I remember driving down to Malibu before lunch and walking on a pier I had never seen before. After lunch, I knew there was something special and decided to explore under the pier this time. This photo was taken on May 21, 2016 around 3:00pm.

Lighting

I wanted this image to come to life and give the viewer multiple details to look at whether that be the pier itself or the water. While standing under the pier, I noticed the shadow of the pier cast on the water and beams of light shining through the planks above me. I thought these aspects created depth and was excited to work with the world's natural source of light to create this dynamic image.

Equipment

This was shot on an iPhone 6 and no other equipment was used. Being a recent college grad, I am saving up for camera equiptment but for now my phone will have to do.

Inspiration

Being born and raised in California, the coast has always been one of my favorite places to explore. When I took this photo, it was my first time at this particular beach in Malibu and I was instantly inspired by the pier. I was captivated by the waves crashing into the support beams and knew I wanted to capture this on camera. I rolled up my pants and stood under the pier for a few minutes watching the timing of the waves and then began orienting my lens until I found, what I believed, was a unique view of the pier. Then I began snapping photographs of the waves from the time they approached till they crashed into the pier and I was left with this image called Splash.

Editing

Since this photograph was shot on an iPhone, I had multiple editing options at my fingertips. I enhanced the highlights and contrast to add depth and truly expose the water droplets as they crashed into the pier.

In my camera bag

In the feature I hope to have a camera bag filled with equipment, but for now I carry my phone and a charger with me wherever I go. I hope I can inspire others and shed light on how you don't have to have the fanciest equipment to capture a unique moment in time. Most of us have cameras on our mobile devices and can discover unique places to shoot with a little exploration.

Feedback

The coastal line of Southern California is truly breathtaking no matter the time or day. Sure everyone loves to explore on the sunny days, but I have found that even when it is overcast you can leave with some unique and breathtaking photographs. Also the ocean is very diverse and serves as a great landscape to photograph, it just takes patience and persistence to get the shot you want. Be prepared to get low and dirty along with changing the orientation of your lens. I have found that placing my camera inches from the sand produces images with great detail!
