This Eastern Kingbird sits on a sturdy seed stem in the middle of an open field--their favorite spot for catching insects. Eastern kingbirds are found in open, savanna-like habitats, often near water. They occur in fields and grasslands with scattered tall trees for nesting. They generally forage in short bursts, flying out from the perch to grab prey in mid-air, and then returning to the same spot. In spring and summer Eastern Kingbirds eat mostly insects. As the summer progresses, they eat more and more fruit. On the wintering grounds they eat primarily berries.
