Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a beach near Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I had taken my Nikon to do some portraits of them one evening and afterwards I kept following them with waiting for that moment. I had that gut feeling and then it just happened. There they go, hand in hand as they walked toward the ocean that evening. If it happened any later, it would have been dark. The lighting was perfect and the colors were great!

Time

The best time to do outdoor portraiture is either in the wee hours of the morning or at dusk. This was taken around dusk between 7 and 8pm.

Lighting

The lighting was great! It was around dusk, yet it was also kind of overcast that day as well so the colors were not only great but the lighting was very diffused with the sun directly behind me.

Equipment

As simple as it gets... a very antique Nikon D40X. No tripod, no flash and an 18-55mm kit lens. When following young children around, less is more. You have to keep up with them and keep as low to the ground as they are. More equipment (other than an extra piece of glass) makes it easier on both parties.

Inspiration

Inspiration comes with the desire to capture that moment in time. Sometimes you have to wait hours to get that special moment, but you know it's there and when you anticipate it and hear that click, it makes that amount of time all worth it, because that moment will never happen again.

Editing

I did a slight crop and then converted it to black and white. I had this one printed and framed, yet when I went to copy it and download it back onto the computer, the result was a little softer than the original which added a little more character to the photo.

In my camera bag

I have two bags that I use depending on what I may be doing that day. My larger bag holds my Nikon D40X, a Canon 60D and an older Nikon 35mm. I also have a medium format German camera from the 50's that I take out occasionally. Between the Nikon and the Canon I have a 40mm, 50mm and a few wide angle and telephotos lenses which vary. Some of those lenses are still fully manual. I also carry a Yongnuo YN560 flash and a few cheapies as well, along with camera straps and a variety of different equipment, batteries, hoods and a tripod.

Feedback

Be patient and wait because as soon as you give up that one moment will come along and you will regret it. Its also good to know your equipment and what it can or can't do. Last piece of advice to those starting out is to go manual. While digital is nice, sometimes it is too easy and that is why I still use my 35mm and manual lenses (which fit on my DSLR's as well with an adapter).
