Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in La Jolla, California at what seemed to be quite the popular tourist stop. Seals and Sea lions where everywhere! Near and far. The ones up on the coastal rocks didn't seem to mind all the people at all...as long as you didn't get too close.

Time

To be specific, the time this shot was taken was 1:12pm. This was the perfect time to take pictures of the sea lions considering it was the middle of the afternoon when the sun had been out a few hours by then to warm the rocks and give me plenty of light.

Lighting

There isn't much to share about the lighting I used in this shot now that you know it was taken in the after noon with the sun right over my head.

Equipment

When I first set out for my walk along the coast, I had brought with me my wide lens in order the get a long full shot of the oceans horizon. However, I had grabbed the wrong one! It didn't fit...oops. So I stuck with my main 18-55mm lens. The camera I take all of my photos on is my very first and praised Canon EOS Rebel T5. Its the only camera I've got but I love it and it gets the job done. That's all I used.

Inspiration

I love animals. Its that simple. As a child I always wanted to be a vet and take care of all kinds of animals. I am still studying as a wildlife major, but photography has always and still is a love of mine. So now as I work towards studying animals, I am also photographing them every chance I get. When I had set up to take pictures of the ocean, I didn't even think I would get so close any of the sea lions, but when I did I wasn't even thinking about the water any more, all I had in mind was the magnificent mammals all around me.

Editing

I did enhance the colors to make everything a little more vibrant and to make the color pop off the white background of where ever it is. But that's all I did. No cropping at all. I really was tha close.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon Rebel T5 with a 18-55mm lens. I know it seems like barely any add on at all but I always bring with it my 58mm lens as well. Even though it only enhances by 2mm, its something, and sometimes, something can be everything. And lastly, because you never know if your lighting could change on you, something could spark your interest that you didn't know would be there, for any reason, I bring along my cover lenses. A CPL 58mm, a UV 58mm, and an Ultra Violet 58mm.

Feedback

Wildlife photography is very different from the many many styles out there. First of all, when looking for something to photograph, a nice location a mile off the highway isn't going anywhere, it can't move, it can't run. You have all the time you need for landscape photography as long as the weather and your lighting stay on your side. But it's not the same with animals. They're there one second, then could be gone the next. You have to be quick, but you also have to be patient at the same time. Waiting for the perfect moment, just like any shot.
