Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of those electric power towers you see on the street. There is a nature trail not far from where I live, and while walking I came off the trail into an apartment complex where one of these towers was on the side of the parking lot. I stood underneath the tower and took a picture because I thought it looked really cool.

Time

It was around the afternoon, somewhere between Noon and about 2:00 PM, but the heavy overcast made it look a bit darker and later in the day.

Lighting

I would have preferred a clearer sky, I actually went back to take several more shots of the same tower on different days, but something about the cloudy overcast sky for this one made the picture look more dynamic. I adjusted the exposure just a little bit so that it wasn't too dark or too light. Other than that I left the settings alone. I wasn't happy with the brighter pictures with the clear sky, so I stuck with this version.

Equipment

Just my Nikon L620 and my good 'ol eyeballs. No tripod, no flash, nothing fancy. Just point, align, and shoot; just the way it was meant to be used.

Inspiration

The Right Down The Middle Viewbug contest was going on (I think that was the name of it), and I needed a picture to enter the contest. Everyone had REALLY good and amazing pictures, so I was looking for something unique to submit. When I stood under the tower and looked up, it almost looked like some type of weird alien tunnel you could walk through in the sky, as if the floor and side was made of glass and you are walking down the corridor... at least, that's what I imagined. I aligned the camera to the center to the best of my ability and took the picture. I suppose I am happy with the way it came out.

Editing

No, I almost never edit my photos, other than adding a watermark. It is rare that I add anything else. Sometimes I will put a photo in Black And White or add a bit of vignette, but for this photo I left it as is. No editing or post-processing.

In my camera bag

My Nikon L620 camera with extra batteries, and a bottle of water to stay hydrated, that's it. For now I just have a simple point and shoot camera, but one day I would love to have a full professional camera set with all the bells and whistles. *drools in delight*

Feedback

Not really, I don't have much advice. I learned that it is better to be open-minded and keep your eyes keen for common things that you can photograph in uncommon ways. This turns our normal world into something magical. I mean, how common is one of these power cable towers? We see them all the time, there is nothing special about them. But it is rare that we take the time to walk close to them and inspect them or look right down the middle. Finding unique angles for something common can create an interesting perspective to make a common photo look a bit more dynamic. I've been experimenting more with unorthodox photography to become more creative. Looking at other photographer's work inspires me to try harder and attempt more complex shots. More importantly, I don't think you need a lot of fancy gear. I got started with my cellphone ad a point and shoot camera, so almost anyone can get into photography now, you just need a bit of curiosity and a keen eye for capturing detail. Thanks for the questions, they were fun to answer!
