Fantastic control of light, color, and technique. I appreciate the slight movement of the water and sky. Nice work!

Location
This photo was captured in Lavallette, NJ, on a dock stretching out into Barnegat Bay. I was at my uncle's house across the street and noticed the sky setting up for a glorious sunset. I grabbed my gear and ran across the street. This is one of only a few exposures I took before the light was gone.Time
This was taken at sunset. As I visited with my uncle, I noticed the sky changing, the clouds really moving, and the color starting to come up. I raced across the street to the dock and quickly set up my shot. This was one of my first exposures that day.Lighting
I wanted to capture the motion of the clouds, while calming the water, which was a bit turbulent. I used a Vü Filters 10-stop ND filter along with a 3-stop soft edge ND grad for the sky, and got an exposure of 150 seconds. That gave me some excellent cloud movement and calmed the water to a much smoother look.Equipment
Nikon D810, AF Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G, Induro CGT214 Tripod. Vü Filters 100mm 10-stop ND filter, and Vü Filters 3-stop soft edge ND grad.Inspiration
I knew this dock was at the location as I had been here before. The previous times I was there, the conditions weren't right for a great image. The sky would be flat, or too cloudy. This time, I had my gear ready and just kept watching the sky to see if it would be worth capturing.Editing
I shoot raw files only, so yes, I did do post processing. Using Adobe Camera RAW I used a technique I use to flatten the tone of the image, bringing the highlights and shadows well inside the edges of the histogram. Then I brought the image into Photoshop, and using Nik Color Efex, I built up the color and contrast to what you see in the final image. In my camera bag
In addition to my Nikon D810, I always have a 16-35mm f/4 and a 24-120mm f/4 in my bag, along with my set of Vü Filters. Depending on where I'm headed and what I expect to see, I may also have a 105mm macro, and an 80-400mm f/4-5.6 in my bag. If I'm doing night shots, the 24mm f/1.4 is definitely in there.Feedback
Watch the sky and be ready. It's always changing and it can be tough to tell what it will be when the right moment arrives.
