Location
This shot was taken on the deck of our home in Austin, Texas. The kitchen window overlooks the deck and from the kitchen, I saw the squirrel out there behaving in a way I had never before seen a squirrel behave! I grabbed my iPhone and ran out to the deck, worried that the sound of the opening door would cause the squirrel to scamper away. Amazingly enough, he remained in place for a few seconds as I took the shot!Time
Mid-afternoon on a hot summer day, thus the squirrel's heat exhaustion!Lighting
I was lucky wth the lighting, since so many other times of day, the image would have been washed out from direct sunlight.Equipment
Just my iPhone! I was lucky I had it at hand when I saw the scene.Inspiration
In 25 years of living in this house and seeing countless squirrels every day, I have never before or since since a squirrel do this--felt like I had to capture the image to believe it happened and show my family!Editing
No.In my camera bag
My iPhone is never far from my hand. But I usually shoot with a Canon Cybershot point and shoot with a 20x zoom--it takes amazingly good pictures for a point and shoot, and more bells and whistles than I have learned to use. While I long for a good-quality SLR, the reality is that the camera you have with you is always better than the camera you left at home because it was too big and heavy. The point and shoot fits in my purse and is usually with me when I need it.Feedback
Nature always has some surprises up her sleeve! Be on the lookout for what is unusual and special, something you don't see every day. And sometimes you don't have the luxury of setting up the perfect image--just grab it when you can. Keep that iPhone or point and shoot handy!
