Location
At a theatre show in mainland China.Time
At night in an evening show.Lighting
It was a difficult environment for filming but using manual settings and pre-adjusting for focus, the photo object was a success in my opinion.Equipment
I did not have my usual camera to hand a Canon 5d III, so had to rely upon my trusty Canon G1X. This also presented some challenges due to its limited settings. Capturing movement in darkness is particularly difficult.Inspiration
I was enthralled by the whole show and wanted to capture the true spirit of the event. What better way than immortalising the Emporer in such a wonderful photograph.Editing
Using photoshop and lightroom I brought out some shadow detail and enriched the colour a little. I also added a little compensation for exposure then a small tweak on sharpness. In my camera bag
Canon 5DIII, 70-300L lens, 27-70 F2L lens, 28mm F2.8 USM prime and 24-105L as a main walkabout lens. To travel light and as a backup I also use a G1X.Feedback
Beginner if possible use an SLR, fast lens and auto ISO and inch f stop to max possible before shutter speed causes blur from low light handshake and/or camera movement. A Pro should limit max iso, 3200/6400 depending on camera ability to handle noise, then pre focus and preset for low light. Focus tracking is best if subject moving of course.
