Location
I took this photo while exploring the Chelsea district in New York. This bridge connecting two buildings stood out distinctly and had an air of antiquity about it that instantly brought feelings of 1920's New York that has become such a distinguished and loved era in history.Time
I left Chelsea Markets around midday when I came across this while walking in the highline district and it seemed almost perfect with the clouds in the sky blocking out strong light from the sun yet at the same time, it was sufficient to keep the scene bright.Lighting
I wanted this photo to emphasise the shape and structure of the bridge. The natural light of the sun helped to place shadows across the left building and under the bridge, which simply brought out the stateliness of the structure against the backdrop of the sky even further.Equipment
This was shot on a Sony Alpha A6000 mirrorless with the 16-50mm lens. The camera was rested on a ledge as I did not have my tripod with me at the time.Inspiration
I photographed this against the backdrop of the clouded sky in black and white to emphasise the boldness of the design and its stalwart appearance. It reminded me of New York’s industrial era, yet at the same time, it bared a resemblance to the recently transformed New York High Line. It feels as if the bridge itself is caught between two different eras, and is acting as the link to connect them.Editing
It was a beautiful photo to begin with so I didn’t want to touch it up too much but I felt that it would be much bolder in black and white, so I did a colour conversion then adjusted the contrast and exposure to highlight the bridge. In my camera bag
I now have 2 wide angle lenses (19mm wide and 12mm ultrawide), 8mm fish eye, 55-200mm telephoto and 16-50mm kit lens, filters and tripod.Feedback
It always helps to be in the right place at the right time, serendipity is bliss!
