Behind The Lens

Location

I was on a field trip with my photography class in North Adelaide, South Australia.

Time

It was one of those perfect weather days where there are lots of people out and about enjoying the day. This was taken late in the morning, so not the ideal time of day to be shooting but when an opportunity presents itself you can't be choosy!

Lighting

The sun was pretty high so it was lucky that the tree this gentleman and his best friend were under provided some interesting shadows and contrast to a pretty bright scene.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS 60D with an EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS @ 200mm ISO 100 f 5.6 @ 1/250

Inspiration

There was something a little nostalgic about the scene. This old man, dressed very nicely, with his little friend sitting on a bench just enjoying the day. I didn't know him and I didn't speak to him because I didn't want to interrupt his day. But it just caught my eye as a secret grandfather moment that I wanted to be able to remember.

Editing

Aside from processing in black and white, I did straighten, crop and lower the highlights in the background. I also did some cloning and straighten the buildings in the background.

In my camera bag

EOS 5D Mark III, Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 SP Di VC USD, Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD, Canon 50mm f/1.8 EF II, 2 speedlites + triggers, intervelometer and various bits and pieces

Feedback

Always be in the watch for the unexpected. Like I said I was on a field trip where I was supposed to be capturing formalist images (lines and structure). I essentially broke away to get this image for about 30 seconds hiding behind a tree before rejoining my classmates. I regret not finding out who this man was and have since put the image out there to see if anyone recognised him, but unfortunately have not been able to identify him. So another lesson I learned the hard way is to talk to people if appropriate.
