Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken between Oregon City and Molalla in Oregon. It is actually parked in front of a junk yard.

Time

A few weeks before this photo was taken I was driving past about sunset with my daughter and noticed the lighting on the car was amazing that time of day and made a mental note to come back. Then on the day that the photo was taken we were leaving my mother in laws house about 7 pm and I requested we take the long way home so that we could photograph the car. Once again the golden hour did not disappoint.

Lighting

I love back lighting, In this case it reflects off the few areas of the car that are still shiny and in doing so highlights the areas that are not.

Equipment

this was shot with a 5d mkiii and a 24-105 L lens.

Inspiration

I have always loved older cars, and love to photograph them. The location and lighting on this car during the golden hour is just perfect.

Editing

I did post process. In this case I upped vibrancy and contrast, used some dodging on the highlights and burning in the shadows as well. The final piece was I actually did a sky swap. I stop and shoot golden light skys and sunsets whenever I get the chance so that I can use them whenever the sky doesn't quite match what I have in mind. This sky was shot about a week before the photo was taken.

In my camera bag

Three camera bodies; 5d mkiii, T3i, and Elan 7. Three lenses; 70-200 2.8 , 24-105, and 50 1.8. I also have two Speedlights that I use for portraits.

Feedback

Lighting on inanimate objects changes through the year. revisit a location at different times of year until you get the lighting that you want to highlight your photo.
