That is just a very relaxing picture to look at. Places like that are good to go to after a long and stressful week.

Behind The Lens

Location

I was visiting my parents in Florida, and we stopped in the middle of the Hwy. 98 bridge over the Ochlochnee Bay in Panacea. I was inspired also by a local photographer and his daughter, who I met on the bridge. He showed me some sunset shots on his phone that he’d taken from the bridge, and each one was completely different from the others. Some days are diamonds.

Time

Sunset. The sun sinks fast on the Gulf in the winter, but my Dad drove us over the bridge at just the right time that day, and traffic was light.

Lighting

I don’t shoot indoors often. Sunset and sunrise are the most exciting times of day, but I don’t manage to get up and out at sunrise very often. Stormy weather is always great, too.

Equipment

I got a great tripod, a Gitzo with flip-type adjustments. It’s really light, but strong, and very easy to set up quickly. With a Nikon D800 attached to it, and a cable-release, I’m able to get a sharp image in most any situation.

Inspiration

My dad lives near the Gulf, and I drive down from Atlanta once a quarter to spend time with him his wife. It’s a beautiful, rural part of Florida - due south of Tallahassee. They’re near Appilachicola, Dog Island, Sopchoppy, Carabelle, and many other awesome small towns along Hwy 98.

Editing

I rarely post shots without at least removing any spots, and/or tweaking the shadows, highlights and contrast a little. Some people have said that I go too far with adjustments and filters, but others like that style. My sister refers to those shots as my “not found in nature” collection, lol. Abstract doesn’t appeal to all, I suppose, and if it’s a truly great shot, why mess with it?.

In my camera bag

Nikon D800, tripod and cable release. 24-70mm lens.

Feedback

Keep shooting longer exposures until it’s dark.
