Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this photo in my home, well my bedroom to be exact. This was actually the first shoot of it's kind. I had just gotten a new flash set up and was anxious to try it out. This was the first time that I ever used off camera flash and I was sold instantly. To achieve this kind of lighting in a poorly lit room at night, I was amazed to say the least!

Time

This photo was taken quite late if memory serves around 10:30 in the evening. I remember my wife getting home from work after closing at the mall and pretty much begging her to let me take some photos! I was very happy that she agreed however grudgingly it may have been. I can also say that she was very pleased with the end results as well as I was though!

Lighting

This was a test run of my new flash set up, well the first time ever getting the flash off the camera. I had just received my stand and shoot through umbrella that day and my new yongnuo flash a few days prior. I love how this image turned out because I still have the ambient light from the ceiling light as well as the nice soft light from the flash through the umbrella. I don't think I could have asked for a better first attempt.

Equipment

This shot was captured with a Nikon d7100, with a Nikon 50mm 1.8 lens , hand held. Other equipment used was a flash stand, a white shoot through umbrella, and a yongnuo YN560 IV Flash kit.

Inspiration

What can I say my wife is all the motivation I ever need to capture powerful and sensual shots like this. I love to express the beauty of life and the human body is no exception. Everything in this life holds its own beauty and sometimes it takes us seeing it in a different way, or in a new light that really allows us to stand back and appreciate whats in front of us everyday!

Editing

I normally edit all my photos in Lightroom, this shot was no different. I did very minimal corrections to this photo however. I corrected the white balance lightened the photo a tiny bit and added a touch of contrast and saturation.

In my camera bag

Normally along with my Nikon d7100 of course I have my Nikon 50mm 1.8 lens, and my Nikon 85mm for portrait sessions. I have both of those prime lenses and use them all the time. On occasion I will take my Tamron 70-200 2.8 as well but I can easily achieve the same types of shots with the 85mm and it weighs a lot and I mean a lot less!!!

Feedback

As far as the pose I was just messing around having a good time with my wife. She is already incredibly beautiful and amazing so why not do everything I can to achieve and bring that out in photos! We were just trying out different things and came upon this which really stuck me as a powerful and eye catching pose. As far as the lighting goes something I learned that day and continue you to try and develop to this day is, the farther away the model is from a light source in relation to the size and strength of the light really makes all the difference. It's the difference between hash direct light and soft natural looking light. And remember some of our best work comes from moments of peace and quiet, so have fun, relax, and keep shooting!
