Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a bush in my front yard of all places.

Time

It was a beautiful sunny afternoon, at the end of our New Zealand summer

Lighting

I waited until the sun was just right for lighting up my model, but not able to penetrate the leaves to much, causing a darker background, and shadow play. This was to give the illusion that the bush was denser than it actually was, so it was no longer just bush he was climbing out of but a thick forest.

Equipment

This was taken with a little Canon PowerShot A495. Nothing fancy.

Inspiration

I had been doing shoots of children in costumes most of the day. My eldest son had been assisting me with the props, and had strung a necklace around his neck and another looped over his ears and resting on his nose while he helped me find items for the next sitting. When he turned in profile he reminded me on a tribal child. Poor kid had makeup on him before he new what was happening. Luckily for me hes a good sport, and one of my favorite models to deal with. He got into character quick and we had this photo within two shots.

Editing

I only do minor editing on my photos, contrast, brightness, saturation, tone. That's it, just nice and simple. Only time a photo goes into manipulation is for canvas art prints on my fantasy art page.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my little Canon PowerShot A495 everywhere for random photos on the go, mainly because I have two of my babies to juggle at the time. I also have a bag with a huge supply on batteries, different sd cards and my old Sanyo E2100EX which only comes out for booked shoots as it chews through my batteries. So only a little arsenal in my bag.

Feedback

I think having a model that is confident , or a model that is comfortable with you is key to getting some lovely shots. Sometimes it is the simple things that inspire us to create something different. And there is nothing wrong with thinking outside the box, or being spontaneous with your choice of locations, themes and models
