Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the local wildlife park near my home just an hour south of Sydney Australia . I feel it is only fair i give their web site a plug. symbiozoo.com.au

Time

It was taken during the afternoon. I had spent most of the day looking at Kangaroos , Tigers the usual tourist stuff. I was on my way out when i came across these two just hang about in their enclosure. The just reminded me of two mates just hang out.The day was overcast and a bit cool, which is why these two were so lively.

Lighting

As the light was not glaringly bright it gave me a good chance to show off the amazing tones of these reptiles.

Equipment

I used a cannon EOS600D which i have had for a few years , but still learning how to use it properly. The lens is a 18mm to 200mm. This gives me a good range to photograph and saves me changing for zoom shots.

Inspiration

I just love taken "action" shots. I have never been particularly interested in landscape photos. I had been to a workshop on how to get the best from moving objects. So as these guys were not moving very fast it gave me chance to practice . As i have stated before, they just looked like two mates hanging out looking like they were having fun.

Editing

The only post processing was a bit of cropping. I am relatively new to digital photographing and only have very small idea of how the side of it works. It is something i would like to know more about, but that will come in time

In my camera bag

The only thing i have is the EOS 600D ,18-200mm lens a cheap old tripod and i cable for long exposures. As well as a back up battery and a empty memory card.

Feedback

My advice would be to just sit and watch the animals for a while if you have the time, look away from the camera. Have the shutter speed on double the longest length of your lens. ie mine is a 200mm , so for the this action shot i had it on between 1/350 and 1/500.This freezes the motion, but does not make it totally still. The other advice i was given by someone at a workshop i did was "don't be afraid to spray and pray" meaning ...put the setting on multiple shots and just take lots of pics. For a fast paced action shot ie motorbikes and cars, this can provide good returns .instead of just trying to get the one shot.
