Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my friends back yard in Fresno California.

Time

It was around two or three in the afternoon when I took this shot.

Lighting

The lighting for this time of day was harsh but thats what I wanted. I purposelly waited till after the sun had risen high enough to get the lighting I wanted.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Canon 7D and a 35mm lens. Because I waited for the sun to rise up to its highest point I didnt need a flash to compensate for the harsh lighting as I placed a black backdrop far enough above my friends head to give me as close to even lighting around him as possible.

Inspiration

My inspiration for this photo is the work by Richard Avedon, he is my favorite photographer and I feel like much of my work is reminiscent of his. I started a personal project that I titled "Millenial", many of the photos that I have taken for this project follow very similar steps to achieve the same look as this photo.

Editing

I did some minor adjustments in lightroom for the color, contrast, shadows, and blemishes.

In my camera bag

I normally carry a Canon 5D mark iii, Canon 7D, canon L series 24-70 mm f/2.8, L series 50 mm f/1.2, Canon L series 70-200 mm f/2.8, and Sigma 35 mm f/1.8. Beyond that I use a Canon 580 ex ii flash and soft box.

Feedback

My advice to those looking to capture a similar look with their photos would be to study the work of Richard Avedon and look at how different forms of lighting compliment the subjects. Both natural and artificial light sources provide very deep levels of beauty but in rather different ways. Experimentation with both light sources will bring out your own unique style when capturing portraits.
